Woman in Taichung found dead at home with multiple wounds; 37-year-old son, appearing dazed, referred to authorities on suspicion of homicide

A woman surnamed Zhou, in her sixties, was found dead in her home in Tanzi District, Taichung City, on the 12th. A post-mortem examination by prosecutors revealed multiple fractures to her head, face, and chest; suspecting foul play, authorities detained her son, surnamed Lin. It is reported that the son remained silent and appeared dazed during police questioning; he has a history of mental and physical disabilities. Police referred the case to the District Prosecutors Office today, recommending charges of homicide.

While Lin was lucid during questioning by the Daya Precinct’s Criminal Investigation Division, he remained silent throughout the process and even refused to be interrogated at night. During a follow-up interrogation today, he continued to remain silent with a vacant stare. Police referred him to the District Prosecutors Office this morning on suspicion of homicide.

Reports indicate that bloodstains were found on the floor of the room where Zhou’s body lay; police have collected samples to determine if the blood belongs to her and are investigating whether any potential murder weapons were present in the home. Prosecutor Tsai Ming-ju of the Taichung District Prosecutors Office oversaw the forensic examination yesterday afternoon. Preliminary findings showed a hematoma on the back of Zhou’s head, fractures to her nasal bone and right cheekbone, and broken ribs in her upper chest. Authorities believe the cause of death was central nervous system injury or hemorrhagic shock. Suspecting external force was involved, the prosecutor issued an arrest warrant and directed the Daya Precinct to detain Lin.

Investigations revealed that Zhou (63) suffered from suspected chronic illnesses and regularly attended medical follow-up appointments. When she failed to appear for a scheduled appointment around 2:00 PM the day before yesterday, the medical facility contacted her niece; the niece reported the matter to the police after being unable to reach Zhou. Police and firefighters arrived and forced entry into the home, discovering Zhou lying on the bedroom floor with a severe head laceration. She showed no signs of life and was not transported to the hospital.
